Harold
J. Voorhees, President of Serve-U-Sweets Inc., a local cookie and snack
food distributor, began elected
service in 1987 when elected to the Wyoming City Council. In 1989 Harold
was elected Mayor of Wyoming, a Grand Rapids suburb of 63,000 residents,
and reelected mayor in 1991.
The fall
elections for 1992 saw Harold elected to represent the City of Wyoming
and a portion of the City of Grand Rapids in the Michigan House of Representatives,
from the newly created 77th State House District. As a member of the
Republican Caucus in Lansing, Harold was elected by his peers to serve
as Chair of the Republican Caucus after having served a term as Vice
Chair. Harold served on the committees of Local Government, Education,
Insurance and Government Oversight.
Because
of term limits, Harold could not return to Michigan's House of Representatives.
In 1998 the voters of the 77th district elected Joanne Voorhees, Harolds'
spouse of 40 years, to serve as their State Representative and Harold
was elected as a precinct delegate.
In 1999
Harold was elected Chair of Michigan's 3rd Congressional District. The
3rd district includes all of Kent County, all of Ionia County and half
of Barry County. The Chair and its 17 members serve Congressman Vern
Ehlers and the State Committee of the GOP.
In
December of 1999 Govenor John Engler, with the Michigan Senate concurring,
appointed Harold to the Michigan Merit Award Board. The seven person
board oversees the Michigan Education Assessment Program test and the
Merit Award Scholarships for students that achieve on the MEAP test.
As a former legislator, Harold served on both the K-12 and Higher Education
Committees of the State House of Representatives.
At
the May 2001 Conerstone University Graduation Ceremony, Harold received
his Associates Degree of Business graduating with Magna Cum Laude, Latin
honors.
Beside keeping up with the cookie business, which is now operated by Harold Jr., and working with Joanne, who is a Wyoming City council member in the 3rd Ward. Harold serves as Director of Public Relations for Citizens for Traditional Values located in Lansing. Harold is also serving as the 2001 - 02 President of the Grandville Rotary Club.

Joanne and family are members ofResurrection Life Church, worshipping
and serving there since 1972.
